How much you delegate to employees depends largely on how much uncertainty the person can handle (see Delegation Poker).
But it also depends very much on the situation. If you ask yourself in which situations which leadership styles are most effective, an interesting pattern emerges:
Situation | Character | Management style |
Simple | Quickly manageable, linear, clear --> Best Practice | Rather deep poker cards, rather "directive" best practice |
Complicated | Understandable with enough time --> Good Practice | Play poker as high as possible. Empower, integrate, delegate. |
Complex | After two weeks of analysis, I understand what it would have taken a fortnight ago... --> Emergent Practice | Play poker as high as possible. Take away unnecessary security, endure necessary security. |
Chaotic | Events come thick and fast --> Novel Practice | Deep poker cards. Clear announcements! |
